Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Alerts Community to SCAM in southern Boynton Beach

Monday, June 11, 2012, a resident of the Regal Shores community in southern suburban Boynton Beach answered a knock on her door. A white male, mid 20’s to early 30’s wearing a hard hat and safety vest introduced himself as a plumber, working for the property management company. He advised her he was there to inspect her water pipes to make sure they were not in need of being replaced. While he was checking the sink, he sprayed what he claimed to be a type of acid on her hands and told her she needed to immediately wash her hands with soap and water. She removed her rings and washed her hands. He momentarily distracted her and took the ring. He advised her he needed to get some supplies from his truck and never returned.

Should a resident have a “worker” come to their door unsolicited, they should immediately question the reason why he is there, preferably through a chained door or nearby window. If he advises he is working for the property management company or any other business or governmental agency, they should have the “worker” wait outside, lock their door and verify the story. If it does not checkout, immediately call the Sheriff’s Office or the nearest law enforcement agency.

Anyone having information of a similar event Crime Stoppers at 1-800-458-TIPS (8477).
